First Grade
Cessnock 4 – Souths - 11
Cessnock played a determined and very strong South Newcastle outfit and despite being beaten 11 – 4 the goannas were not disgraced and played some great footy.
Cessnock kicked off against a South Newcastle lineup in the first grade clash of the round game and opened proceedings with a great Chris Riley run.
Newly promoted kicker Beau Ryan failed in his first attempt.
This t ry proved to be the only points scored during the game by our team.
A tremendous cover run by Chris Pyne stopped a certain South try and hopefully set the tone for the rest of the game, and then a repeat performance from Beau Ryan stopped another expected try to the visitors.
Souths were running at Cessnock from all points of the ground and making good yards so something had to give and it did with Souths crossing alongside the posts. 6 points to 4 in favour of Souths.
An all in brawl resulted in a penalty to Cessnock and a good raid on the Souths line but the Goannas were held out.
The half time siren sounded with the score 6-4 in favour of Souths.
Half way through the second half Souths again crossed but failed to convert.
Cessnock needed a converted try to catch up. Tempers were flaring and punches thrown.
Darcy Etrich made a tremendous run only to be denied. Souths got the scrum feed and continued to raid Cessnocks line to be held out by some solid defence even though Cessnock looked bunched up.
Souths took a shot at a field goal and was successful, taking the score to Souths 11 points Cess nock 4 and that was the score when the siren sounded.
The Goannas had put up a great fight against their rivals who should now be the favourite to take out this years title.
Tries: Chris RILEY
Goals: Beau RYAN ( o from 1)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 16 – Souths - 42
Reserve grade started with a try to replacement forward Jason Austin running off a Jackson Roe pass within minutes of the kick off.
Souths reply was on target with two of the easiest tries allowed them.
Tom Cremona then put the goeys on the front foot crossing alongside the uprights adding the extras to bring the score to a more repectable 12-10 in favour of Souths.
Cessnock took the lead just 8 minutes before half time courtesy of a great Mitch Fallon effort the extras added by Tom Cremona.
16-12 but that scoreline did not reflect the efforts of South Newcastle who were the dominant team.
The second half opened with Souths crossing under the dot.
Each side had now score three tries conversions favouring Souths 3 to 2.
Another two tries to Souths in quick sucession had the home side down 30 -16.
Tries: Jason AUSTIN: Tom CREMONA; Mitch FALLON
Goals: Tom CREMONA ( 2 from 3)
Third Grade
Cessnock 0 – Souths - 36
Presidents cup were the first to take the field last weekend against a strong South Newcastle team but with beautiful weather for footy.
It took 33 minutes for points to be scored but it was not Cessnock who scored.
Souths took a 6 points to nil lead into the break.
The second half was a disaster for the Goannas who allowed another five tries to the visitors.
36 nil was not a flattering scoreline for the Cessnock team.

First Grade
Cessnock 10 – Kurri - 20
Last Saturday the local derby between the Cessnock Goannas and the Kurri Bulldogs was contested at Cessnocks home ground.
The Goeys were smarting following last weekends drubbing by the Maitland team and the Bulldogs were on a high following their demolition of South Newcastle.
Kurri won the day, leaving a worried Cessnock camp to consider what happens next.
The day started with Cessnock veteran Shane “Webby “ Saunders taking the field in Presidents Cup and looked right at home, crossing for a try late in the first half.
It was great to see the talents of Webby on display which should only enhance the abilities of our younger Goannas.
It appeared to many in the crowd a repeat of reserve grade was about to happen when Kurri crossed in the early part of the first half.
Cessnock appeared at sixes and sevens and when Kurri crossed for its second try nine minutes from kick off another white wash was on the cards.
A good Cessnock set allowed Beau Ryan to grab a scrambling try at the edge and Cessnock had opened its account.
Kurri hit back with a great run only to be denied, then for whatever reason Cessnock started to play footie and they needed to as Kurri appeared to live with the ball and with their third try under the posts a large score was on the cards.
Kurri's fourth try was added at the thirtieth minute and it was 4 tries to 1 against the home team.
Followers of the Goannas were wondering whether the wheels had fallen off the machine, and rightly so as Kurri where all over the Goannas.
A face saving try just on half time to Jack Fitzgibbon and the half time score was Kurri 20 Cessnock 10.
The first 35 minutes of the second half saw both teams attacking and defending, solidly, particularly the Kurri side who appeared to want to win more than Cessnock.
A tryless, goalless scoreless second half.
Kurri had won the derby 20 points to 10 and it is now time for Cessnock to re-group.
Tries: Beau Ryan: Jack Fitzgibbon
Goals Joby Patten ( 1 from 2)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 4 – Kurri - 56
Cessnock opened reserve grade with a great Fabian Dunstan run only to be pushed into touch over the line however Kurri’s retaliation was swift.
Two tries in five minutes had the Dogs up 10 nil, with Kurri all over Cessnock and this was to be the pattern all day.
3 unanswered tries in twenty minutes and Kurri on a roll before Cessnock hit back via Nathanial Nixon out wide, Cessnocks only points of the day.
Six tries to one at half time was a full time score not a half time score but thats what it was 32 -4 at the break.
What coach Steve Robertson said at half time is possibly unprintable.
A further 5 tries to Kurri in the second half had Kurri the ultimate winners, 11 tries to one .
Tries: Nathanial Nixon
Third Grade
Cessnock 18 – Kurri - 18
Cessnocks President Cup team included names like Joel Brown, returning after suspension, and Shane (Webby) Saunders however, it was Kurri who opened the scoring however Goanna Tom Cremona grabbed a runaway try to even the score.
From the resulting kick off Cessnock allowed the ball to go dead.
Kurri were looking the stronger of the two teams adding another converted try before half time.
Cessnock seemed their own worst enemy, dropping balls at the most inopportune moments.
With just one minute on the clock till half time the newly signed Webby Saunders, crossed out wide, and with the conversion successful the score was levelled at 12 all.
Cessnock and Kurri traded tries early in the second half and with a penalty awarded to Cessnock right in front allowed Cessnock two points and the score once more even at 18 all and that was the score line at full time.
18 all and possibly a good indication of the game.
Tries: Tom Cremona, Shane Saunders, Ben Self
Goals: Jason Orr ( 2 from 3)
Penalty Goals: Jason Orr ( 1 from 2)

Cessnock 6 – Maitland - 30
Last Saturday, following a minutes silence in memory of the late John Knipe and Don Bradley the Goannas were anything but quiet and respectful of the Maitland team, in their game.
Maitland are the same team who toppled the Goeys in last years grand final and the club who have allegedly obtained the signature of Cessnocks Adam Withyman following a disagreement between the big prop and the Goeys.
Goanna secretary David Cleaves said last Friday “ Adam has not been released by the club and to suggest otherwise is way off the mark – it’s a matter in progress”.
“A good wake up call for our whole squad” were some of the words spoken by coach Craig Thomas following last weekends game against Maitland, together with “ some of the positions may be up for grabs” and “ i’d rather lose a game at this stage of the competition as opposed to the back end” Thomas was anything but impressed with the performance of his squad against last years premiers and his words echoed those thoughts.
The Goannas took to the field with the same team as last weekend , the coach seeing no need to rearrange a winning formula, even though the week was disrupted and soured by an incident during the game against South Newcastle resulting in former Goanna Kyle Morton being sent from the field.
The resulting media coverage has done nothing for the image of the game but much of what has been written is true and the visual medias interviewing of Brendan Hlad accurate.
The club must now move on said Brendan.
Putting aside the weeks dramas involving the Goannas this week it was missed tackles early in the game that allowed Maitlands Vern Moana-Mason to score alongside the posts.
6 nil in favour of the visitors and the Goannas looking anything but a winning team.
Cessnocks response was the right response with Beau Ryan first try for the year and with Pattens extras it was 6 all, but that was the scoreline Cessnock lived with for the rest of the game. 6 points.
Maitland then took the game into their own hands and the easiest of trys resulted, again alongside the posts.
12-6 remaining that way until the half time siren.
Maitland continued their successful ways with the first try of the second half and they appeared to be all over Cessnock, and then with the second try of the half minutes later it was confirmed they were all over Cessnock .
22-6 in favour of the visitors. The Goannas were not in the hunt it was Maitlands half. Another Maitland try, 26-6.
With a six try to one flogging by the Pickers Cessnock will need to improve greatly if they are to a serious contender for the premiership.
A lesson well learned.
The coaches award for the day went to back rower Brad Grant who also picked up the converted players player award.
Tries: Beau RYAN
Goals: Joby PATTEN (1 from 1)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 14 – Maitland - 20
In the reserve grade clash it was a close affair between two evenly matched teams but it was Maitland who put on the first points under the post twenty minutes into the half.
Cessnock responded in the best possible way via a Fabian Dunstan try converted by Michael Deacon to bring the half time score to Maitland 10 Cessnock 6. An even first half.
Cessnocks start to the second half was great with a wide out try to Michael Deacon to even the score 10 all and 25 minutes to go.
Back to back penalties to Cessnock and a missed penalty goal then a Maitland attack followed by more penalties to Cessnock had the Goeys firing and then another try to Michael Deacon had the Goeys in front for the first time this year.
The Goannas launched another raid into enemy territory but to no avail.
It was very much a see sawing game with attack from both teams and good defence from both teams.
Cessnock cacked and Maitland scored.
14 all with teh conversion to come. Missed. Five minutes to go and maybe Cessnock was in for its second draw of the season both at Cessnock.
Maitland were caught behind the line and from the resulting kick Cessnock regained possession only to lose the ball in the first tackle.
Maitland capitalised on the error and from the scrum win scored along the posts with thirty seconds to go.
Maitland 20 Cessnock 14. A close game with the coaches award going to Daniel Murray and the players player to Jake Law
Tries: Fabian DUNSTAN; Mick DEACON (2)
Goals: Michael Deacon (1 from 2); Daniel MURRAY ( 0 from 1)
Third Grade
Cessnock 0 – Maitland - 42
In a massive blow to third grade, their inspirational captain coach Simon Rawle could not take to the field to lead his President Cup team against the enemy, Maitland, due to a broken arm suffered in last weekends game against South Newcastle.
The tough as teak Rawle commented, “ if I could, I’d cut the plaster and go out their and play” continuing, “the boys will have to do without me for a few weeks” .
Maitland opened proceedings with a try just 8 minutes into the first half and looked to have the better of the Goannas, adding a further two tries and a penalty goal to bring half time score to 18 nil.
Maitland seemed bigger and held the ball a lot better than the locals.
In a repeat of the first half Maitlands big men crossed early and the score was ballooning in favour of the visitors, Big men running against little men will do it every time, and adding to Cessnocks wows was a sin binning and poor ball control.
The final whistle was a relief for the locals who went down 42 to nil.
The coaches award went to the smallest forward on the park Aaron Marks with the players player to number 6, Jason Orr.
Coach Simon Rawle made special mention of first game player Fidel Vial who had a “ blinder”, stating “ this kid can only get better”.

Cessnock 32 – Souths - 14
In last Sundays clash at Townson Oval against South Newcastle there was no love lost between the teams, and that applies to all grades.
Cessnock had a player sent from the field in Presidents Cup and Souths a player sent off just on half time in first grade.
In relation to first grade it was Souths who put the first points on the Goannas, in fact ten points before the Goeys responded, and it was Souths who lead for 65 minutes of the game, even though just on half time they lost former Goanna Kyle Morton after being sent from the field.
Souths lead at half time 10-8, tries to Alfred Whaleboat and Chris Pyne making Cessnocks 8 points.
Following the break Souths increased their led to 14-8 and Cessnock looked in trouble, however it was Souths last points for the day, the Goannas muscling up realising the game is played over 80 minutes not 45.
Cessnock crossed next and with Patten adding the extras the score was locked at 14 all with three tries apiece.
Cessnock took the led with fifteen minutes on the clock and kept the memento going running in another two unanswered tries to eventually run away with the game 32-14 .
A great win against a team playing at their home ground and openly saying when they beat the Goannas they would have beaten both last years grand finalists.
Cessnocks try scorers were Jack Fitzgibbon (2) Chris Pyne (2) Alfred whaleboat and Ryan Gregory with Patten converting 4 from 6.
The coaches award went to Ryan Gregory with Players Player being shared between Joby Patten and Al Lantry.

Cessnock 20 – Macquarie - 18
At Thursday night's game at home the sign on the way to Cessnock Sports Ground said - CAUTION GOANNAS AHEAD..
The Goannas were at home to the Macquarie Scorpions in a game both teams were desperate to win for different reasons.
The Goeys to prove their win last weekend was not a fluke and Macquarie to open their account in season 2011.
The game opened with the goannas scoring via a great effort from last weekends players player Darcy Etrich converted by Joby Patten and it looked like the goeys were on song.
Macquarie then showed their true form and hit back several times almost crossing but were held out by a determined defensive effort from the Goannas.
With ten to half time last weeks try scorer Jack Fitzgibbon did it again adding Cessnocks second try for the evening, followed within minutes by Jacob McKendry who also crossed giving Cessnock a 18 point to nil advantage..
Cessnock were playing great footie and in control, but then seemed to take the” foot off the peddle” and allowed Macquarie back in the game.
With half time approaching Macquarie crossed courtesy of a run away try after an intercept to bring the score to 18-6 at half time.
The second half started with Macquarie again almost scoring following a busting run only to be adjudged held up over the line, all within three minutes of kick off.
Cessnock were not containing the visitors, who were able to break Cessnocks line at will.
Macquarie’s second try was scored. 18-10 and coming back, Cessnock on the other hand looked anything but a premiership hopeful.
The Scorpions had a lot of ball and it showed with the locals defending desperately.
Macquarie scored again with most of the damage done by the Macquarie backs.
The scoreline was then 18 -14 with the goannas only just in front and Macquarie on fire.
It was Macquaries second half and with two minutes till full time Macquarie came up with try number four.
Cessnock had not scored a point in the second half and allowed Macquarie to run in four unanswered trys.
It looked like an 18 all draw.
With the siren just about to go off and with Cessnock attacking the Goannas were awarded a penalty twenty meters out and midway between goal posts and sideline and Joby Patten added the two.
Cessnock winners 20 -18 but Macquarie were by far the better team in the second half.
The scoreline identical to round one and Cessnocks win on the bell as in round one.
Against a fired up South Newcastle this Sunday Cessnocks game needs to improve.
Two points are two points and Cessnock now sits in position 3 on the ladder, taking into account for and against..
Tries: Darcy ETRICH; Jack FITZGIBBON; Jacob McKENDRY
Goals: Job Patten ( 4 from 4)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 10 – Macquarie - 10
Steve Robertsons reserve grade where keen to make amends for their loss against Wests last week particularly in front of their home town supporters and none more so than Alfred Whaleboat who shone on the field.
Nick McLaren crossed first for the Goannas to even the score line 4 all, as Macquarie had opened their account earlier in the half.
The game then settled to a seesawing with Macquarie scoring again, resulting in a half time score of 10-4 in favour of the visitors.
The crowd were starting to build in anticipation of a good second half and the entertainment was coming from some suspect play from the visitors and some try scoring by Brett Stevens.
Macquarie were giving it their all as were the home team, particulary Alfred Whaleboat but one of the biggest cheers came when Macquarie missed a penalty in front with four minutes left on the clock.
It was still 10 all. Macquarie had a shot at a field goal only to miss and give possession back to Cessnock for the first time in a little while.
The game faded to a 10 all draw, perhaps a good indication of the teams efforts, although some spectators are asking why two points were not taken when Cessnock had a penalty right in front, but thats football.
Tries: Nick McLaren; Brett Stevens
Goals: Mick Deacon ( 1 from 2)
Third Grade
Cessnock 12 – Macquarie - 18
Presidents Cup took to the field to do battle with Macquarie Scorpions who like the Goannas are coming off a loss last weekend.
Cessnock playing at home were keen to show their home town followers that they are a capable outfit.
Within three minutes of kicking off captain coach Simon Rawle made it look easy and presented kicker Tory Neville with the easiest of conversions.
6 nil and it looked like a good night for the Goannas.
A hard fort tussle then ensued with both teams trading blows until Macquarie crossed in the 22nd minute, failing to convert.
The half time score had Cessnock in front 6 points to 4.
It was Macquarie who crossed first in the second half to take the lead 8-6 but for a short time only as Jackson Roe added four points for the Goannas following a penalty to Cessnock in front.
Neville converted. 12-8 with Cessnock back in the lead.
With 13 minutes on the clock Macquarie scored out wide to level the score 12 all and it was really game on.
Cessnock responded in the right manner when Simon Rawle was feed a beautiful pass from Jackson Roe to cross under the posts.
Neville the extras.
Macquarie kept trying but Cessnocks defence was up to the task, particularly a great try saving tackle from Matt Gossage followed by a penalty to the home team right in front.
With two minutes to go a penalty kick was on the offer, Rawle missed the kick but the damage was done Cessnock 18 Macquarie 12.
Tries: Simon Rawle (2); Jackson Roe
Goals: Tory Neville (3 from 3) Simon Rawle (0 from 1)

Goanna’s into 3rd Straight Grand Final.
The Cessnock Goannas First Grade side have marched into their 3rd straight grand final & will play Maitland at number 1 sportsground in Newcastle on Sunday after an emphatic 34-22 win over competition heavyweights Western Suburbs at Kurri Sportsground.
A further achievement is that this is Coach Todd Edwards’ 4th straight.
Starting the match at almost full strength & needing to put in a good performance to beat their opponents the boys didn’t start well, they didn’t complete their first 2 sets with the ball & before they knew it they were down on the scoreboard 12-nil.
The Goey’s then replied with a try of their own after some great lead up work from Todd Bates helped big Adam Tearle cross the line.
West’s then pushed the score line a little further with another slick try to lead 18-6 & things were looking ominous for the black & gold’s.
Before the half time break the goanna’s replied with a hard fought converted try to Alec Fata & also a penalty goal right on the stroke of half time.
In the second half things were going to be up hill for the Goannas who were going to be without half back Todd bates with an apparent hip flexor injury but 18 year old Aberdeen junior Tyler Sullivan stepped into the half back role very comfortably.
Shortly after the break Matt Marshall crossed to help Cessnock take the lead for the first time in the match.
Luke Gardner crashed over out wide to take the Goannas to a 28-18 lead before West hit back through Nathan Hinton next to the sticks with a conversion to make it a tense last 10 minutes however the kick was missed & gave Cessnock an unbeatable lead.
Players to really shine for the Goanna’s were 18 year Tyler Sullivan, Alan Lantry, Trent Walker & Brendan Hlad.
Although another great team performance & one that helps the boys carry some momentum into this Sunday’s decider.
Their Opponents Maitland have played only 1 game in over a month & in their 2 meetings this year each team has won a game which will mean a very even contest will be held on Sunday.
This will be a fourth straight Grand Final for Coach Todd Edwards, 2007 as reserve grade coach & 2008, 2009 & 2010 in charge of first grade.
Only proving Todd’s ability as a quality coach & as this is his last year as head coach we hope he and the boys can give him a win & send him out in style, something he so rightly deserves.
“To make four straight grand finals as a coach is a huge deal, with 3 of those in the top grade something that I am sure Todd is proud of & so he should be.
As a club we couldn’t be happier for Todd & the players” said Club President Kane Bradley. “We hope that the boys can come away with a win & send Todd out in true fashion”.
The club would like to Congratulate the boys on making another Grand final & wish them all the very best for the big game & would urge all supporters not to miss this titanic clash which will be sure to draw a massive crowd.
Cessnock club will be running the bars & canteen on the grandstand side of the field & Maitland running the hill side so we would ask all supporters to make the effort & buy their food & drink from the grandstand side of the field.
The players will be going back to the Cessnock Rugby League Supporters club after the match & all spectators are invited back to join the players in what will hopefully be a celebration of a Grand Final Triumph.

Cessnock 60 – Souths - 0
Saving the best for last may be the reason the Cessnock first grade team went on a points rampage in last Saturdays round 18 game against South Newcastle at Cessnock Sports Ground.
With officials shorting the game to 70 minutes the Goeys rattled up 60 unanswered points against the Lions.
With the main game of the day being played in an almost carnival atmosphere with the result of no bearing to the competition results.
To this end the halves were reduced to 35 minutes each, with consent from both coaches and officials.
It was possibly a good move considering the Goannas crossed for 11 unanswered tries during the seventy minutes of footie..
Included in the Cessnock team was debutant Jacob McKendry, who apart from taking out the coaches award for the day scored a try in Cessnocks demolition of the Lions.
It took Claude Gordon, playing in the number seven jumper seven minutes to score the games and Cessnocks first points alongside the uprights.
This followed within a tackle of a great breaking Tyler Sullivan run.
Cessnock seemed to have returned to their better days and were playing with some good footie.
With about fifteen to half time a magnificent solo effort from Mat Marshall resulted in Cessnocks second try.
A day after moving into his new home Chris Pyne added another try, his 21st for the year to Cessnocks total.
To many fans it looked like the Goeys maybe starting to return to their earlier form when Trent Walker crossed for his 12th of the year.
When Hugh Grant, playing his usual tough game, crossed out wide it took Cessnock to 26 nil just prior to the half time siren.
Cessnocks 6th try for the day courtesy of Tyler Sullivan came five minutes into the second half and when converted by Joby Patten the score was 32 nil.
A little bit of niggle crept into the game with former South Newcastle player Adam Withyman the recipient of a few cheap shots.
A good set saw Adam Tearle cross , then Al Lantry playing in the number 3 jumper crossed for the Goannas eighth try.
Playing in his debut game for first grade Jacob McKendry scored, followed by an outstretched Mark White try, then another to Adam Tearle his second for the day and Cessnocks 11th.
Tries: Claude GORDON; Matt MARSHALL: Chris PYNE; Trent WALKER; Hugh GRANT; Tyler SULLIVAN
Adam TEARLE (2); Al LANTRY; Jacob McKENDRY; Mark WHITE
Goals: Joby PATTEN ( 8 from 11 )
The players player for this last game of the 2010 season went to Trent Walker and the coaches award to debutant Jacob McKendry.

Cessnock 0 – Souths - 44
In Reserve grade Cessnock had one more win than their opponents when time was blown on.
The game followed the lead of Presidents Cup lead and was a fiery affair with the big Souths pack leading the way and their backs making big inroads towards Cessnocks line with the Goannas not very convincing in their efforts to tackle.
It was Souths who crossed for five unanswered tries in the first half resulting in a 26 nil score line at half time.
The second half proved no better for the locals with Souths racking up another three converted tries in the second half.
The final score Souths 44 Cessnock nil.
Players player was shared between Daniel Murray and Alfred Whaleboat with the coaches award to an under 18's player, Zaine Morgan.
Zaine has signed with Cessnock for the 2011 season and is a player to watch for.
Third Grade
Cessnock 10 – Souths - 30
Steve Robertsons President Cup team played its last game for the season against Souths, both teams registering five wins for the season.
Cessnocks team included four from the 18s and one from the 17s which is good for Cessnocks footballing future. The Goeys looked the goods during the first half but it was Souths who crossed first.
Cessnock had plenty of opportunities of scoring, including one great 50 meter run by Drew Atkins resulting in a Jarryd Murray try.
Half time score 6-4 Cessnocks way.
Souths scored first in the second half but the game had by this stage slowed right down with neither side seeming very interested in urgency.
The footie then developed into a spiteful affair with one from Cessnock sent off; one sent for ten minutes and one from Souths given ten minutes.
The final score was Souths 30 Cessnock 10
Ties: Jarryd MURRAY; Ryan ATCHISON
Goals: Jarryd MURRAY (1 from 2)
The players player award went to Drew Atkins and the coaches award to Ethan Hodson

Cessnock 18 – Wyong - 40
It was a bad day at the office for the Goannas last Saturday when Cessnocks suffered its second defeat of the season at its home ground, Cessnock Sports Ground.
Cessnock allowed Wyongs forwards to outclass them which in turn allowed Wyongs very fast backs to take charge and break Cessnocks line, almost at will.
Matt Marshall was a late withdrawal from first grade but with his replacement being Brett Stevens there was little, if any, disadvantage to the Goannas line up.
Meanwhile Wyong first grade travelled to the game together by bus, showing the importance placed on this game by the Roos.
The weather was brilliant and included in the large crowd were two bus loads of Calvary residents along as guests of the Football Club on their second outing of the year to our ground.
First grade all went over after the game to thank the fellows for their support.
The first few minutes were brutal and fast with Wyong spreading the ball wide but paid the price when Josh Mantellato went down, leaving the field for a long time .
Cessnock hit back but the ball was split on the line.
Wyong continued its momentum with an individual effort by Wyongs Mitch Williams resulting in the first try for the day.
With fifteen minutes to the break Wyong was in again this time closer to the posts.
Wyong were all over Cessnock, who seemed reluctant to tackle.
Cessnock came good and when Joby Patten scored things were looking good.
The score was now a closer 8-6 Wyongs way although more by good luck than football.
Cessnock were terrible in defence with Wyong finding move to room when in possession.
Right on the bell Chris Pyne scored Cessnocks second try and his 19th for the year.
Both sides had scored twice but it was Cessnocks superior goal kicking made the difference.
12 -8 Cessnocks way although many in the crowd thought the Goannas were lucky to be in the lead.
The second half started with Wyong again in control with their backs leading by example attacking Cessnocks line making what appeared easy breaks.
Wyong received an eight point try following an incident and took the lead 16-12 with 30 minutes left on the clock. It was time for the locals to stop the Wyong backs or get beaten .
Cessnock regrouped the result being a Trent Walker try converted by Joby Patten, but a split ball from the resulting Wyong kick off put more pressure on the Goeys particularly when not completing their tackles.
With fifteen to go the game was getting very physical and spiteful and with Cessnock needing to score twice it would be hard fifteen.
It wasn’t to be with wyong crossing for their sixth try for the day to in effect wrap up the game at 32-18.
Wyong went on to win the game 40 to 18 and to confirm to anyone who did not know that they are definitely contenders for another premiership in a couple of months time.
Tries: Joby Patten; Chris Pyne; Trent Walker
Goals: Joby Patten (3 from 3)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 22 – Wyong - 34
Cessnock opened proceedings in reserve grade with a great Jack Fitzgibbon run just seconds after the kick off, however, the final pass to an unmarked Alfred Whaleboat went to ground.
Wyong responded by scoring alongside the uprights. Cessnock picked up the tempo and were looking dangerous capitalising on a Wyong mix up resulting in Tom Cremona crossing.
Daniel Murray went down with a knee injury and was carried from the field, not to return.
Jason Austin scored a good individual try just before the break so that the score at half time was 10 all, two tries apiece.
The second half proved disastrous for the goeys allowing Wyong to run riot, not helped by one of Cessnocks players being sent for 10 minutes although Cessnock did hit back with tries to Matt Gossage and Kori Barber .
All a little too late with the final score Wyong 34 Cessnock 22.
Tries: Tom Cremona; Jason Austin; Matt Gossage; Kori Barber
Goals: Tom Cremona ( 3 from 4)
Third Grade
Cessnock 4 – Wyong - 60
Graham Robertsons Presidents Cup outfit were the first Goanna team to play last Saturday against the team just two points behind the competition leaders.
Cessnock were running seventh but coming off a character building win last week against Kurri and also having the home ground advantage.
Wyong showed the better form in the first half aided by some poor defence by the home team, one sin binning and a send off.
The game was over at half time when Wyong lead 32 nil.
With the score line at 50 nil Cessnock struck back via a Cody Swan try but the damage had been done.
The final score Wyong 60 - Cessnock 4.
Tries: Cody SWAN

First Grade
Cessnock 34 – Kurri - 10
The Cessnock Goannas were never troubled in their dire struggle against the ‘old foe’ the Kurri Bulldogs in their round 15 NRL clash last Saturday afternoon at Kurri Sportsground.
Cessnock opened the scoring just 5 minutes after referee John Taylor blew time on and were never headed wining six tries to two.
Jacob Jenkinson playing in the number 5 jumper for Cessnock scored a double taking his try tally for the year to nine; Chris Pyne crossed late in the game for his 18th try for the season with fellow back Luke Gardner also scoring a good try.
Cessnock forwards seemed to have the measure of their opponents handling the boggy conditions better than Kurri.
Cessnock forward Brad Grant and Alec Fata were also in the try mix scoring one a piece in the 34-10 win.
Jenkinsons first try came as the result of a Todd Bates towering kick and a good contest of the ball by the number 5 and his second try came as the result of an intercept on Cessnocks line and a 100 meter run, the full length of the field.
It was during this intermediate period the Goanna forwards did the hard yards none better than Adam Tearle who has lost a lot of weight since we last saw him play.
Another to stand out in the Goanna pack was Mark White who was tireless in his defence and attack.
The half time score favoured Cessnock 16-4.
Pynes try came following a chip kick and an individual effort, although support was at hand. Coach Todd Edwards shifted Alec Fata to the centres and this move resulted in a try to the now Cessnock resident.
The final score Cessnock 34 Kurri 10 Cessnock scoring three tries each half and Kurri one.
The coaches award went to Tyler Sullivan who had a blinder being selected in the first grade for the first time this year.
Players player went to Jacob Jenkinson, Mark White being adjudged the best forward and Trent Walker the best back.
Tries: Jacob Jenkinson (2) Chris Pyne; Luke Gardner; Alec Fata; Brad Grant
Goals: Joby Patten 5 from 6
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 8 – Kurri - 22
In reserve grade it was a typical Cessnock Kurri encounter involving some speed, some slogging, some thumpings and some barging.
It was hard and tough. The first half was very even with Cessnock opening the scoring courtesy of Nick McLaren with Tom Cremona converting from the sideline with some help from the local Kurri crowd.
This unfortunately proved to be the Goannas only try of the game.
At half time it was six all and game on.
At the start of the second half Kurri were reduced to twelve men for a period and it was during this enforced layoff that Kurri really put on the pressure eventually gaining a penalty and two points.
In the last 12 minutes Kurri rattled up another 14 points to take the game 22-8.
Cessnock coaches award went to Kori Barber with the players player award to Jacob McKendry.
Best back to Matt Gossage and best forward to Kori Barber.
Tries: Nick McLaren
Goals: Tom Cremona 2 from 2
Third Grade
Cessnock 16 – Kurri - 14
The first game of the local derby was played in sunshine then rain with equal first on the competition ladder Kurri taking on lowly placed Cessnock and showing why they are up on the competition ladder.
Cessnock looked dune and dusted with a 14 to nil scoreline against them at half time.
The first half had plenty of spite with one Cessnock forward being sent for ten minutes in order to try to control the situation.
Not long after the break Heath Tsakissiris ran a good 60 meters to open Cessnocks scoresheet, and with Cessnock looking good a revival was on the cards.
“Old hand” Simone Rawle broke through and fed a flying Cody Swan for Cessnocks second try and with the Rawle conversion it was Kurri 14 Cessnock 12.
Cessnock were on fire and when Tsakissiris crossed for his second of the day the Goannas took the lead for the first time in the game.
They did not relinquish that position and took the game 16-14.
It was definitely a game of two halves with the Bulldogs on top in the first 35 minutes but the half that counted, the second went to the Cessnock Goannas.
Tries: Heath Tsakissiris (2) Cody Swan
Goals: Simon Rawle 2 from 3

Cessnock 20 – Maitland - 30
A dismal day at the office.
With a score line that could have been worse Cessnock came away from last Saturday's game against front runners Maitland knowing that they need to improve their game if they wish to contest this years grand final.
The Goannas were ordinary in the first half, as were Maitland but it was the Pickers who regrouped following the half time break to take out the local derby.
Cessnock's first grade team looked anything but comfortable when it took to the field of play against competition heavyweights Maitland last Saturday in the clash of round 14.
Out were Ryan Gregory Adam Withyman, Mick O’Shea and Claude Gordo injured, although a determined Brendan Hlad took his place alongside his team mates, replacing the late withdrawal of Mick O’Shea.
Maitland were at full strength.
Cessnock's bench included Adam Tearle, Tyler Sullivan, Alfred Whaleboat with Mark White being given the captain's duty.
The going was very tough with Maitland scoring first as a result of some dubious calls and four sets to the Pickers in a row.
Cessnock's efforts were not aided with some bad ball control resulting in a lot of defensive work being done by the Goeys.
Cessnock were lucky with the referee calling a forward pass after Maitland had crossed for its second try of the afternoon just 8 minutes into the game.
It was Cessnock's turn to attack the Maitland line going close to crossing a couple of times before Cessnock's number 6 Joby Patten crossed alongside the uprights.
Perhaps an ugly try but worth in total six points.
Cessnock continued playing ordinary football and Maitland kept a permanent base around Cessnock's tryline ultimately breaking Cessnock's defensive line and scoring their second try.
10-6 Maitland's way and eleven minutes to the break and that's the way the first half finished.
Cessnock coach Todd Edwards was disappointed in his teams efforts although their defence was excellent left Edwards wondering “how come we are only four behind” referring to the 10-6 halftime score.
Maitland hit the second half with purpose resulting in a converted try and a 16-6 scoreboard.
A good set to the Goeys following a penalty resulted in Chris Pynes seventeenth try for the season and Joby Pattens second conversion.
16-12 Maitland's way and 30 minutes left on the clock, time enough for the Cessnock team to win a game, but it was Maitland who crossed under the posts. 22-12
Trent Walker crossed and Alec Fata was down.
22-16 one converted try the difference and twenty minutes left on the clock.
Beau Ryan made a break only to miss the line.
Alec Fata came off with what could be a hip injury and Maitland added another try.
28-16 Former goanna Dan Metcalf got ten in the bin then to even up the referee sent Cessnock's Mat Marshall for ten.
Maitland got its eighth penalty, just to even the penalty count.
The penalty goal put Maitland to 30 points and Cessnock 16.
A consolation try to Cessnock's Luke Gardner took the score to 30 -20 Maitland's way.
Player's player was shared between Al Lantry and Joby Patten with the coaches award to Alec Fata.
Best forward awarded to Mark White and the best back to Trent Walker.
Tries: Joby PATTEN; Chris PYNE; Trent WALKER; Luke GARNER
Goals: Joby PATTEN ( 2 from 4)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 14 – Maitland - 40
Undefeated in twelve games Maitland's reserve grade team took to the field ready to “do a number” on their less fancied opponents Cessnock who had won only 4 of their games.
Cessnock had massive problems with a bare 13 players lining up the Goeys due to injuries and late withdrawals.
With no score until half way through the first half it was Cessnock's Tom Cremona, showing no signs of his spear tackle last week who crossed out wide opening the scores.
Maitland retaliated crossing twice however, Cremona took matters into his own hands and again scored this time after sprinting about 50 meters and with his conversion the scores were locked at 10 all.
At half time the score was Maitland 14 Cessnock 10 and hopefully another good second half performance.
The Goeys, in the second half looked exhausted and with a limited interchange of fresh players performed above expectations.
Tyler Sullivan crossed for Cessnock's only try in the second half bringing the score to a more respectable 28 - 14 , however it was a valiant Goanna team who ultimately went down to a stronger Maitland outfit 40-14 .
Players player went to Cale McKenzie who also picked up the coaches award. The best back was awarded to Jason Austin with Nick McLaren the best forward.
Tries: Tom CREMONA (2) Tyler SULLIVAN
Goals: Tom CREMONA ( 1 from 3 )
Third Grade
Cessnock 10 – Maitland - 64
Presidents Cup were severely depleted in the playing ranks taking into the game an Under 17 player Ryan Aitchison used to fill the numbers.
Maitland were on top of the competition ladder on 19 points Cessnock way down on 8.
The day started badly for the Goeys with a dropped ball from the kick off adn shortly after an intercept by Maitland opened their scoreline.
The Goeys hit back with Callan Roe crossing to equalise the score.
By half time the score had climbed to Maitland 36 Cessnock 4.
Cessnock were their own worst enemy during the first 35 minutes dropping the ball on several occasions when they had the line wide open.
The second half had to be better and it started well when Nathan Aitchison crashed over alongside the uprights.
Adam Stinson was a stand out trying everything and almost scoring Cessnocks third try.
Other performers included Drew Atkins and Shaun Skuthorpe. Poor hands continued and was a problem for the Goeys.
The final score Maitland 64 Cessnock 10.
Players player went to Drew Atkins the coaches award to Adam Stinson with best back to the under seventeen player Ryan Aitchison and the best forward to Adam Stinson.
Tries: Callan ROE; Nathan AITCHISON
Goals: Fabian DUNSTAN (1 from 2)

Cessnock 48 – Central - 16
Cessnock returned to Cessnock Sports Ground last Saturday for its top of the round clash with fifth placed Central and won convincingly 48-16 but at a big cost.
Injuries to Goanna players include Ryan Gregory (suspected broken hand); Brendan Hlad (shoulder) Adam Withyman (wrist) and Joby Patten (concussed).
The team the Goeys beat 42-14 in round 3 put up some resistance but were never going to take out the home team who put on 9 tries to 3.
Chris Pyne, Jacob Jenkinson and Beau Ryan crossing twice each, with Ryan also converting three tries to give him a personal tally of 14 for the game.
The Goeys are sitting second on the competition ladder one point behind Maitland although this may change given Maitlands salary cap problems.
The NRL meet last night to work out what to do about Maitland revelations with many of the NRL clubs unsympathetic to the Pickers woes.
In first grade Cessnock took to the field without Adam Withyman (broken hand) and Brendan Hlad (injured) replaced by Kori Barber and Jake Law.
Brad Grant was in the run on side and made the most of his opportunities ultimately taking out the coaches award for his performance.
Central had made the trip to Cessnock aiming on lowering our colours with its speed out wide.
However just three minutes into the game following a penalty to the Goannas Chris Pyne added another try to his impressive total for the year, his fifteen with more to follow.
A great conversion from the sideline to Joby Patten.
A little while latter an impressive Mark White offload saw Joby Patten cross midway between sideline and posts. 12 nil.
When Matt Marshall made a break and crossed wide out however, he was called back much to the displeasure of the local crowd.
It was then Chris Pyne turn to take a forward ball and be recalled with the line open.
It was Beau Ryan who started a length of the field raid with one of the best individual runs seen this year.
The raid was stopped on the Central line. Matt Marshall was making a nuisance of himself but it was Al Lantry who crossed for Cessnocks third try of the first half.
Central crossed in the 35th minute following a dropped ball and mix up although it was a doubtful call by the referee.
At half time Cessnock were ahead 16 to 6.
The penalty account 5 to 2 Cessnocks way.
Following the break Central took the ascendancy but not for long with a great run by Jacob Jenkinson leading to a second try for the day to Chris Pyne.
Beau Ryan missed the extras.
Cessnock had taken to the field in the second half without Ryan Gregory(suspected broken wrist) and Joby Patten (concussion).
Trent Walker took an intercept to run the full length of the field to be denied one meter from the line however Mat Marshall made amends and crossed this time not to be denied. .
In the 55th minute Jenkinson crossed for Cessnocks sixth try for the day, then a little later added another try.
It was then Beau Ryans turn to score and liking the feeling did it again shortly after.
Cessnocks Players player went to fullback Beau Ryan with the converted coaches award to Brad Grant.
Tries: Chris PYNE (2) ; Joby PATTEN; Al LANTRY; Matt MARSHALL; Jacob JENKINSON (2)
Beau RYAN (2)
Goals: Joby Patten ( 2 from 2 ); Todd BATES ( 1 from 3); Beau RYAN ( 3 from 4)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 22 – Central - 28
In reserve grade the visitors are sitting in third spot on the ladder and despite a solid first ten minutes by the Goeys it was Central who scored first.
It was ten minutes to half time when Stevens was sent for ten minutes and with a penalty count of 7 -1 against Cessnock, Central crossed for its third try.
Central then had a man sent from the field following a spear tackle on Cessnocks Tom Cremona.
At half time it was Central 18 Cessnock nil and a whitewashed looked on the cards.
Following the break Cessnock scored three unanswered tries to level the score 18 all with twenty minutes to full time.
Central crossed to again take the lead by six which was reduced to two with a try to Cody Swann playing his first reserve grade game this season.
A game lost but a good effort from the Reserve grade team with Central running out 28 to 22 winners.
Players player went to Adam Tearle and the coaches award to Brett Stevens
Tries: Daniel MURRAY; Cale McKENZIE; Jack FITZGIBBON; Cody SWANN
Goals: Claude GORDON (3 from4)
Third Grade
Cessnock 30 – Central - 34
The Goannas were looking for a reversal of form when the Presidents Cup team took to the field against fifth place Central opening the scoring via a Heath Tsakissiris try.
Central responded crossing for three unanswered tries.
A sin binning and silly penalties did not help the Goanna cause but a revival had the home team behind by 2 at half time.
Central 16 Cessnock 14 but more importantly the game was within the Goannas grasp..
Following the break another fundamental error cost the Goeys six points.
Cessnock responded but Tsakissiris was held up, twice, over the line.
A Dunstan break and fifty metre run ended with Tyler McNaughton crossing wide out .
The argy bargy continued with lots of penalties awarded against the home team but to their credit the Goeys did not give up.
Aitchison crossed and with the conversion the score became closer with Goannas ten points behind.
With two minutes to go Simon Rawle crossed under the posts and when he converted his own try the Goannas were only four points adrift .
The siren sounded with Central 34 Cessnock 30.
Coaches award to Adam Stinson with the players player shared between Shaun Skuthorpe and Adam Stinson.

Cessnock 58 – Lakes - 6
Last Sunday at Cahill Oval, the Goannas ran in eleven tries to one to notch up a 58-6 scoreline against Lakes in their round 12 clash.
All tries were scored by the backs with four each to Chris Pyne and Jacob Jenkinson on the wings, Trent Walker with two and Beau Ryan one.
Todd Bates kicked 1 from 3; Claude Gordon 1 from 1 and Joby Patten 5 from 6.
The Goanna pack did its job in setting up many of the tries but it was a total team effort to score the biggest win for the Goannas this season.
The first grade team was without Chris Adams (Centurion duties) adn Brendan Hlad (injured) but their replacements in Matt Marshall and David Lantry more than covered for the missing duo.
It took the Cessnock team eleven minutes to open the scoring and by half time had scored 38 unanswered points ( seven tries to nil) and a penalty count of 3-1 Cessnocks way.
Lakes were the first to score in the second half but this was to be their only points for the day.
Cessnock continued crossing for another four tries before the final siren put the Lakes fans out of their misery, 58-6.
It was very muddy in the middle but once that area was scouted the run to the line was open on most occasions.
The players player award went to Cessnock number 5, Jacob Jenkinson with Todd Bates playing his first full game of the year gaining the coaches award.
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 30 – Lakes - 10
Cessnock reserve grade team won their fourth game for the year taking a 12-4 half time lead to a 30-10 full time score line renewing their coaches faith in their ability and also to earn the praise of the goanna followers.
All six of the Cessnock tries went to the backs with Fitzgibbon, Cremona, McKenzie Gossage, Stevens and Sullivan scoring four pointers.
Tom Cremona converted 3 of the tries.
The reserve grade team are a great outfit who with any sort of luck can still make the semi finals just needing to believe in themselves.
Coach Craig Thomas gave his coaches award to Cale McKenzie with the player's player going to Brett Stevens.
Third Grade
Cessnock 16 – Lakes - 26
The Presidents cup team played in some atrocious conditions but are not using that as an excuse for their loss to Lakes.
Although they had a great 20-10 victory against Wests last week the momentum was not carried through on Sunday.
The game had its spiteful moments with one of the Lakes players being sent from the field in the second half.
The final score was Lakes 26 Cessnock 16.
Tries were scored by Heath Tsakissiris, Nathan Aitchison and Adam Tearle with Simon Rawle converting two .
Steve Robertsons coaches award went to Fabian Dunstan who never stopped trying and the players player went to Mitchell Clarke who also had a sterling game.

Cessnock 20 – Wests - 30
A MIGHTY EFFORT.
The next week for the goannas will be a horror week with the club teams facing three games in six days.
On Sunday the locals take on Lakes at Cahill Oval, back up on Wednesday evening at Townsend Oval for the catch up game v. Souths then back home on Saturday 17th to take on Central.
These games will really test the Goannas stamina.
Meanwhile last Saturday Cessnock first grade fell just short of the line going down to Wests 30-20.
The loss was soured by the fact the Goannas had 12 men only on the paddock for the whole of the second half.
Cessnock forward Al Lantry got his marching orders in the 34th minute of the first half for an alleged high shot on a Wests player.
Club officials are far from convinced of the high shot and will view video evidence before making a decision whether to fight the charge or not. br>
Coach todd Edwards was not impressed with the incident saying “ there’s a big difference between hitting a guy high front on and hitting him high when you are coming from behind trying to dislodge the ball and stop a try”.
Wests in the first half were the better team notching up 24 unanswered points setting up what looked like a “flogging” on the Cessnock team.
Half time advice from coach Todd Edwards must have done the trick as the goannas came back on, with their 12 men and ran up 20 points to nil on their more fancied opponents.
It was not until the last few minutes Wests crossed to take the score line to 30-20.
Playing in his first game for the locals this season Chris Adams was a welcomed return to the local team and although a little rusty with the combinations the Goannas have set up this year proved he still has got what it takes, crossing for two tries.
Club officials are hopeful Chris will be back with the goannas for the remainder of the season.
The coaches award and also players player went to Queensland import and now local Alec Fata who is proving to be one of the better buys for the local club.
Fata was ably assisted by the whole team who stood up and were counted when it mattered.
Although beaten it was a mighty effort on the part of the team and one they can be justly proud of.

Cessnock 12 – Wests - 42

Club officials are going to the record books to try to find out the last time our third grade team would have beaten Wests.
“Been a while” was the consensus of opinion.
Steve Robertson's boys have now won their last two games in style and with a little luck may have turned their season around.
20 points to 10 was a great win for the Goannas with players player award to Shaun Skuthorpe, who had a blinder.
The coaches award was shared between Jacob Carey and Simon Rawle.

Cessnock 42 – Lakes - 10
The scoreline said Cessnock 42 Lakes 10 but at what cost?
Luke Gardner and Todd Bates both sent to hospital to have x-rays on what those in the know said were broken arms.
Cessnocks victory was its 16th for the season having been beaten only once back in round 2 on the 19th April v. Central and with the minor premiership under its belt the locals are eyeing the big one on September 13.
Knights outside back Aku Uate scored four tries and Willy Poleo two in Cessnocks victory last Saturday evening, the Goeys going into the match without Brendan Hlad; Joel Edwards and Chris Pyne all carrying injuries which hopefully will be gone by major semi final time in a fortnight.
Saturdays game at Cahill Oval was 20 minutes old before the NRLs leading try scorer added another to his tally, his 23rd for the season and with Patten on target it was game on.
Lakes playing without Knights imports Luke Macdougall and Tim Natusch were standing up to the Goanna onslaught and it wasn’t long before they too had six points on the books.
By half time Cessnock had added another try this time to Knights reject Aku Uate who scored his first for the day just on half time.
10-6 Cessnocks way.
After the break the Goeys hit their straps and within five minutes Uate had added his second.
The big Tongan playing in the number 2 jumper made some big runs in scoring his second half trys and looked a handful for the younger Lakes United team.
Trent Walker scored, but not long after was in Disneyland following a big hit but he did recover to come back onto the field and finish the game.
Ryan Binge playing like a centre added his name to the try scoring list.
Joby Patten added 10 points to his yearly tally taking his efforts this year to 174 points in the eighteen games or a fraction under ten points per game, an effort his coach Todd Edwards described as " testament to Jobys dedication to his game and to his team".
Edwards added "if we had a team full of Joby Pattens no one would come near us" .
Cessnocks performance was tradesman like and considering it was a "nothing" game they did well.
Meanwhile at Morry Green Oval Wyong demolished Maitland 76-16 and in the process the second placed leading point scorer added 32 points to his name to overtake Cessnocks Joby Patten to win that NRL award.
The NRL award night is to be held tonight at the Newcastle Leagues Club where Willy Poleo should be awarded the leading try scorer award, and the Cessnock Club will receive the Minor Premiership award plus the Panasonic Cup.
In a game of no importance to the ladder Cessnocks players player went to import Aku Uate with the coveted Coaches award again to Ryan Gregory.
Best back went to Aku Uate and best forward to youngster Jake Law.
Cessnock coach Todd Edwards is keeping things normal announcing to his team that training is on this week Tuesday, Thursday and a Saturday session.

Cessnock 54 – Kurri - 4
When the Goeys put the sword to the Bulldogs to the tune of 54-4, and if you count the last time the two sides meet the dogs have now been humiliated 120 points to 16, by their arch rivals Cessnock.
Good day at the office for Todd Edwards first grade team last Saturday when
with a total of ten tries the Goannas welcomed back Cooper Vuna to local league at the Graveyard.
Vunas three tries were only part of the demolition of the Kurri outfit by a much superior Cessnock team hell bent on being minor premiers for 2009.
With tries to Chris Pyne (2); Beau Ryan; Joel Edwards; Ryan Binge; Willy Poleo (his 20th for the year) and Brett Stevens with Joby Patten slotting 7 from 10 it was a game Cessnock fans loved and the Kurri supporters hated.
Cessnock for the first time in season 2009 took possession of the Panasonic Cup which they will defend against second placed Wyong at home this coming Saturday.
The upcoming game has everyone talking as it has been labeled a preview of the Grand Final to be played in a months time.
Cessnock are desperate to maintain their winning run at home and are asking for all the fans to turn out and encourage their them in this pursuit.
Captain Ryan Gregory, playing in his first year for the Goannas said "the support from the hill is great, it really lifts us when we need it.
"Just love those fans."
A huge crowd at Kurri saw just four minutes on the clock before Cessnocks Beau Ryan opened the Goeys account with as it turned out the first of ten tries.
Due to the late inclusion of Knights Cooper Vuna the former Singleton Greyhound Luke Gardner was relegated to the twos a move which Coach Todd Edwards was reluctant to make, but had to.
On the plus side the game saw the first grade debut of talented Damon Bard who was on the bench but did get plenty of quality game time.
By the time the first half was half over the Goannas had rattled up 18 points to Kurris nil and some fans were asking when would the bubble burst.
Ryan Binge was playing the best footie of his season with some telling and damaging runs.
Kurris only points in the game came just before half time when after being in possession for what appeared hours they scored.
At half time the score was Cessnock 24 Kurri 4.
After the break the very physical encounter continued with some light relief coming when Cessnocks two water runners were dismissed from the field of play by referee John Taylor.
A ruckus in which a Kurri player was sent from the field for allegedly kicking at a Cessnock player resulted in a penalty to Cessnock and another try to the Goeys who by now were running riot over their Bulldog opponents.
The final whistle blew much to the Kurri supporters relief when the Goannas had scored their tenth try for the day.
A 54-4 scoreline the reward for Cessnocks efforts and something the dogs will remember for a long time.
For the home team the coaches award went to a very deserving Ryan Gregory, the players player to Ryan Binge, best back to cooper Vuna and best forward for the second week running
Brendan Hlad.

First Grade
Cessnock 30 – Lakes - 14
Round 8 of the Newcastle Tooheys Cup was played last Saturday at Cessnock Sports Ground between the home side and lowly placed Lakes.
Lakes had included in their run on squad Luke MacDougall returning from injury and hoping his form would allow him back into the Knights first grade squad, and Issac Dargen a Knights NYC player.
Cessnocks' number one, Dean Amos was a late withdrawal due to a hamstring injury.
His replacement Beau Ryan was called up from reserve grade and more than adequately handled the custodian position. Cooper Vuna was also a late replacement being recalled to the Knights.
Of interest to local fans is the fact that Chris Adams (no. 9) was at the end of round 7 in the lead in the Newcastle Player of the Year award - and it was also announced at the club presentation that Chris has been selected in the NSW country team.
Big Willy Poleo had run up 8 tries which is three more than shown in the program, plus another against Lakes. A total of 9 in all.
For the first five minutes of the game Lakes owned the ball and camped in Cessnocks ten meter zone, until Joel Edwards saved a certain Lakes try under the posts.
It was then Cessnocks turn to attack but they could not finish off moves which would have resulted in tries.
Cessnock bombed several possibilities and this seemed to be the order of the day.
Finally Cessnock hit the line courtesy of Willy Poleo, but it took 23 minutes to do so.
Chris Adams, again playing great footie, scored his try but unfortunately Joby Patten's attempted conversion hit the uprights.
The game was not going all Cessnocks way but the scoreline had Cessnock 8 Lakes nil and 11 minutes till half time.
Luke MacDougall made a great break only to be dragged down by a flying Chris Pyne but all in vain when Lakes scored.
With two minutes to go Alan Lantry dropped a ball, which had it been held, was worth four points, Lakes hitting right back.
Lantry made amends almost sending in Chris Pyne. At half time 8-4 Cessnocks way. Two unconverted tries to one.
A bad start to the second half with Cessnock kicking out on the full - penalty to Lakes.
As in the first half Lakes stayed in the goeys ten meter area for what seemed like an eternity.
Lakes were the first to add to their half time total. 8 all with the side line conversion failing.
Cessnock did not seem to be wanting to play footie and Lakes were gung ho. .
When Cessnock played footie they scored. Big Sione Finefeuiaki under the posts with Joby Patten adding the extras.
Luke MacDougall his second try coming at Cessnocks expense - poor defensive work. 14 all and 23 minutes to go.
Some great work amongst the forwards saw Brendan Hlad go over, but it could have been any one of three Goanna players.
Patten converted. 20-14. Unexpectedly a penalty shot for the Goeys right in front failed, they then had to whither a strong Lakes set.
It was nail bitting stuff. Chris Pyne again stopped Luke MacDougal on his way to the line.
A lucky break following a bounced ball saw Todd Bates adding four points under the posts and for Joby Patten a conversion taking the score to 26 -14 Cessnocks way.
Beau Ryan finished the day with a try and the final score was Cessnock 30 Lakes 14.
Another out of jail job but, as they say in the movies, read the paper and the score.
Tries: Willy Poleo; Chris Adams; Sione Finefeuiaki; Brendan Hlad; Todd Bates; Beau Ryan
Goals: Joby Patten ( 3 from 5)
Penalty Goal: Joby Patten (0 from 1)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 50 – Lakes - 10
The Cessnock Reserve grade team were determined to forget last weeks drubbing at the hands of Wyong so took to the field against Lakes determined not to have a repeat performance.
A 106 point turnaround was the result of the game.
Two minutes into the game Jarryd Murray charged down a kick and got four points right under the dot.
Adam Tearle converted. Ten minutes later Daniel Murray set up a rampaging Heath Tsakissiris and the score line was Cessnock 12 Lakes nil.
Two minutes later Jack Fitzgibbon elevated to Reserve grade for the game joined the four point club. 16-0 Cessnocks way.
Chris Riley joined the club, Skuthorpe added the extras. .
The tries kept coming with Jack Burke setting up Jacob Johnston, then Heath Tsakissiris for his second. The half time score 32-0.
Within minutes of the second half starting Jacob Johnston added his second try for the day.
The Boat joined the try scoring feast notching up the Goeys 8th try; Jack Burke the goeys 9th.
The final scoreline was Cessnock 50 (ten tries; 5 goals) to Lakes 10.
Tries: Jarryd Murray; Heath Tsakissiris (2); Jack Fitzgibbon; Chris Riley; Jacob Johnston (2)
Alfred Whaleboat; Jack Burke; Daniel Murray.
Goals: Adam Tearle ( 3 from 4)
Shaun Skuthorpe (2 from 6)
Under 19's
Cessnock 22 – Lakes - 18
The nineteen's with a one from six winning record took on Lakes who had won 4 of their six so no one expected the young Goannas to win.
Someone had forgotten to tell the young Goannas as they played great attacking footie and were rewarded for their efforts going into the half time break 12-8 up.
Following the break the locals again hit the ground running with Tom Higgins getting his second for the day.
With just seven minutes to go Cessnocks Jake Chambers slotted a penalty goal which took the score to 20-18 Cessnocks way.
A close finish was on the cards and when Lakes scored but where called back for an obstruction the locals were off the hook.
A late penalty in front saw the Goannas take their second win for the season and the game 22 Lakes 18
Tries; Tom Higgins (2); Kori Barber
Goals: Jake Chambers (3 from 3)
Penalty Goal: Jake Chambers (2 from 2)

First Grade
Cessnock 40 – Souths - 28
Another close encounter with Cessnock scoring seven tries to six in their 40 points to 28 win and that was the story at Townsend Oval last Sunday.
Fans are wondering what the Goannas need to do to put someone away. Our wins all seem to be ugly, but they are wins.
Cessnock is now equal first on the competition ladder following Centrals defeat last weekend at the hands of Cessnocks this Sunday opponents Wyong.
Cessnocks three Newcastle representatives, Chris Adams; Willy Poleo and Sione Finefeuiaki all took to the field against South Newcastle last weekend despite having played a full hard and physical game against Illawarra the day before.
It is good they all turned out for the three scored tries for the Goannas in their Sunday win at Townsend.
Out of the Goanna lineup was Claude Gordon who has been cleared back to Dubbo and centre Cooper Vuna who played his first game for the Knights since injuring himself in a pre season game.
Called up to replace Vuna and Gordon were Beau Ryan and Brett Stevens both worthy replacements.
The game had see sawed up and down the paddock for the first twelve minutes but it was Souths who took the first points putting the Goannas on notice that they were ready to play good footy even though they had not won a game this season.
Some tough work by the Goannas ended up with Joel Edwards scoring his first try for the season and when Joby Patten converted the Goannas hit the lead for the first time. 6-4 with 20 minutes gone.
It was Souths who then took the lead away from the Goeys with a great wide out try. Souths were taking it to Cessnock in a manner the Goeys had not encountered before.
Sione Finefeuiaki took matters into his own hands and a barging run ended up right under the black dot. Patten the extras.
Chris Adams joined his Newcastle rep. partner also scoring again with Joby Patten adding the extras. Souths did not give up trying and with just a couple of minutes till half time camped at the Goeys line but not over it.
At half time the score was Cessnock 18 Souths 8, three converted tries to two unconverted tries.
Within three minutes of the second half kick off it was Souths who went over following a dropped ball by the Goeys, which the Lions capitalized on.
It was time for the Cessnock team to shape up but it was Souths who were doing the hard work and with dividends. Souths again went in only to be called back for a foot in touch.
Cessnock then put on a good passage of play but to no avail. Souths showed Cessnock how to tackle and added together with their enthusiasm were all over the Goeys.
Some luck to the Goeys ended up with Joby Patten scoring a try from lucky bounce.
It was Souths turn to get some luck scoring and when they converted the try the score was Cessnock 24 Sought 18..a six points difference, all from conversions.
Big Willy ended up scoring his first for the day taking the Goeys out to a ten point advantage.
A misdirected Leigh Abel pass ended up in the hands of Trent Walker through a couple of other hands and then ending up with Todd Bates scoring.
Patten Converted. 34-18. An intercept by a Souths player who ran the length of the field only to be brought down by a flying Chris Pyne however the damage was done and following the play Souths scored. 34-22.
Souths again scored this time, under the posts. 34-28 with three and a half minutes left.
Cessnock were penalized for being in front of the kick off and with a six point advantage only it was worry time for Cessnock officials.
Ryan Gregory crossed late in the game to give the visitors Cessnock a 40 to 28 point win.

Reserve Grade
Cessnock 14 – Souths - 40
Cessnocks reserve grade, running eighth on the ladder took on Souths, running fourth on the ladder in a game Cessnock were desperate to win.
Cessnocks Beau Ryan and Brett Stevens were elevated to first grade prior to the game due to the late withdrawal of Cooper Vuna and Claude Gordon from the first grade lineup.
Within fifteen minutes Souths were ahead 12 nil. Cessnock had their opportunity but a badly directed pass went into touch which resulted in Souths second try.
Discipline seemed to be lacking in the Goanna team.
Souths defense was excellent but eventually Josh Papworth followed up a Daniel Murray chip and scored under the post. 12-4 with eleven minutes to go till half time.
In short time the Goannas again hit Souths were it hurts with a great Matthew Gossage try which was not converted .
12-8 in favour of Souths at the break.
.
Following the break it was the Goannas who took it to the opposition and it wasn’t long before Colby Shcrader went in and this time Adam Tearle converted.
14-12 and Cessnock were in the lead for the first time in the game, it had taken 40 minutes for the Goannas to hit the lead but the lead was short lived as Souths went in for their third try for the day.
Former Goanna Kyle Morton rubbed salt into Cessnocks wound by scoring a barging try under the posts.
The final score had South Newcastle 40 Cessnock 14.

Under 19's
Cessnock 0 – Souths - 46
The nineteens should have taken to Townsend Oval with a positive attitude following their first win last weekend.
Souths had won two so that a close encounter was expected.
Souths put first points on the board but it took them 20 minutes.
By half time the Lions had a handy 22-0 lead which was to prove too big a lead for the young Goanna outfit.
Overall the Cessnock team seemed to lack ability in attack and lacked the necessary attitude to put their training instructions into action.
A bad day at the office with Souths winning 46 points to nil.
Players player went to : Matt Paprocki
Coaches Award to : Jack Fitzgibbon

First Grade
Cessnock 46 – Nelson Bay - 30
A close encounter of a Marlin kind last Saturday ended happily for the locals when all three Goanna grades came away from Cessnock Sports Ground victorious.
A good day at the office for the Goannas, although coach Todd Edwards was less than impressed with the attitude of his charges.
The starting lineup for the Goannas first grade included Knights centre Tonga Cooper Vuna who took the place of a very unlucky Beau Ryan.
It is a requirement of the Knights that returning Knights first grade players return via first grade in the real NRL hence the inclusion.
Also returning to first grade were rep players Sione Finefeuiaki and Chris Adams.
A guard of honor by the Goanna old boys greeted the home side when they took to the field to defend their home territory but it was the Bay who scored first after some great work.
At the sixth minute mark the niggle started with an opposition player punching Cessnocks number one resulting in a penalty to Cessnock at the wrong end of the field.
Another indiscretion by the Bay and another penalty to Cessnock on the half way line. The Cessnock defense was wanting and the locals looked gone for all money.
Willy Poleo decided to change things around and went in out wide, the first of his three tries.
A great Chris Adams run ended with Todd Bates scoring Cessnocks second right under the dot. 12-6 in favour of the Goeys.
Cessnock started to throw the ball around and they looked good. Pyne went in only to be called back.
The Bay responded by going in under the posts. 12 all and ten to go to half time.
The Goeys slipped back into bad habits and when almost over the line gave away a silly penalty.
Another bad error saw the Bay in open country and only a try line in front of them.
18-12 at half time in favour of the visitors.
A break by Cessnocks Todd Bates just after half time ended in nothing. No one backing up and a line wide open.
Another raid this time by Claude Gordon gained points - six in total,
again an even scoreline of 18 all.
The Bay responded by attacking Cessnocks line and almost scored keeping the Goeys in a defensive pattern all afternoon. Stupid mistakes made the game look very ordinary.
A Todd Bates chip resulted in Cooper Vuna not only scoring his first try for his adopted club but sparking some determination into the Goanna team.
Dean Amos stopped a certain Bay try following another lapse in the Goeys concentration but the visitors were not to be outdone. Scores locked up again at 24 all.
Poleo’s second try broke the deadlock but the try was not converted. 28-24 Cessnocks way.
A barging Mark White run with an offload to Joel Edwards who in turn feed Joby Patten who in turn sent Chris Adams in - Patten converting.
It was Cooper Vuna' who split the ball with the line open but this did not mark the return of the bad handling of earlier in the day.
Nelson Bay hit right back scoring with thirteen minutes left on the clock. 34-30.
Cessnock should have clicked into gear however when a break via Daniel Metcalf followed the kick off no one was with him.
The Goeys with another Todd Bates chip allowed big Willy to score his third for the day and again a ten point buffer for the local team. .
The last try for the day came for a hard working Ryan Binge.
The final score had Cessnock 46 Nelson Bay 30. Players player went to a hard working Chris Adams with Ryan Gregory being awarded the coaches award.
Best Back: Dean Amos Best Forward: Brendan Hlad
Tries: Willy Poleo (3); Todd Bates; Claude Gordon; Cooper Vuna; Chris Adams;
Ryan Binge
Goals: Joby Patten (5) Dean Amos (1)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 42 – Nelson Bay - 20
The Goanna Reserve grade team to play the Bay were strengthened by the inclusion of first grade players Beau Ryan and Brett Stevens in the run on squad and together with Colby Schrader meant the Goeys fielded possibly their strongest line up this season.
The team was due for a win, but with big Adam Tearle a late withdrawal and the Bay in front on the competition ladder whether the win would come or not was yet to be decided.
Both teams started the day trading tries with McKendry, Burke & Lantry scoring for Cessnock and Beau Ryan adding the extras on two occasions.
The half time score 16-8 Cessnocks way. Maybe, just maybe the Reserve grade would win its first for the season.
The second half started great for the home team with Heath Tsakissiris and Chris Riley both adding tries which were converted by Beau Ryan so that half way through the second half the score was 28-8 in favour of the locals.
A lapse in defense saw the Bay go over but the Goeys were not to be outdone and with Alfred Whaleboat scoring his first try for the year.
Cessnock were creeping ahead in the contest.
A great run by Beau Ryan ended up with his brother in law Daniel Murray also scoring adding to a wonderful final score for the home side.
Cessnock 42 Nelson Bay 20
The coaches award for Reserve grade went to a deserving Jarryd Murray with Adam Stinson getting the Players Player award.
Best back: Beau Ryan Best forward: David Lantry
Tries: Jacob McKendry; Jack Burke; David Lantry; Heath Tsakissiris; Chris Riley; Alfred Whaleboat, Jacob Carey; Daniel Murray.
Goals: Beau Ryan (4); Daniel Murray (1)
Under 19's
Cessnock 36 – Nelson Bay - 26
The first win for season 2009 came for the nineteen's at the expense of Nelson Bay last Saturday when the Goannas put on a great 20 minutes stint following the half time break,
ultimately winning 36 points to 26.
The nineteen's took to the field with Knights HG Matthews squad member Kori Barber in the number 12 jumper in a game which would mean, if lost, the team would remain on the bottom of the ladder - both teams had yet to score a win.
Cessnocks first points came from a barging Nathan Aitchison who put the ball down right under the posts - Jake Chambers added the extras.
The Goannas were now in front 6-4.
The Bay hit right back with a brilliant individual effort to their number 7, the another to number 1.
Cessnock had moments in the half when they performed well but other times their defense let them down badly.
Right on the half time siren Kori Barber scored for the goeys so that at half time the Bay were in front 14-12.
The second started perfectly for the goeys when from the half kick off Cessnocks Jack Fitzgibbon ran off a Jake Law run scoring a perfect under the posts try converted by Jake Chambers.
Within minutes Nathan Aitchison added his second try for the day. The Goeys certainly drank some good water at half time.
Cessnocks Tom Higgins scored a great individual try joining.
30-14 of which Cessnock had scored 18 in the fifteen minutes of the second half.
The Bay hit back scoring seamlessly at will bringing the scoreline to 30-26 with 7 minutes left on the clock and with one of their own was sin binned for back chatting.
Final score Cessnock 36 Nelson Bay 26.
Players Player went to former Knights SG Ball player Kori Barber and the coaches award to Callen Roe.
Best back: Jake Chamers Best Forward: Nathan Aitchison
Tries: Nathan Aitchison (2); Kori Barber; Joel Fitzgibbon; Tom Higgins; Matthew Paprocki

First Grade
Cessnock 36 – Macquarie - 16
Seven tries to Cessnock and a 36-16 scoreline was a wonderful result for the Goanna camp last Sunday in their first grade game against Macquarie Scorpions.
Macquarie took into the match a plus 52 differential and Cessnock a plus 2 differential.
Cessnocks first grade took to the field at Lyall Peacock Oval to face joint competition leaders Macquarie without two of their stars in Sione Finefeuiaki and Chris Adams - both on rep duties at Lismore with the Newcastle Team.
Macquarie had three in the rep team but claimed the advantage over the Goannas due to playing at their home ground.
Cessnocks day started well with Trent Walker taking the first points for first grade - his first of three tries.
Unfortunately John Patten failed in his conversion attempt, but a handy 4 points to start the day.
With Macquarie attacking Cessnocks line it was Cessnocks defense which was tested and found to be good.
Cessnock had a couple of opportunities to add points but just couldn’t get the ball over the line, but they were playing fast football and it was good to watch.
A player from Macquarie
appeared to pass the ball off the ground resulting not in a penalty but a try alongside the posts. The Scorpions hit the front 6 points to 4 after 32 minutes of play.
Following four penalties against Macquarie in a row it was Cessnocks Willy Poleo who put Cessnock in front again, 8 points to 6 and a little over three minutes left on the clock till half time.
Macquarie had the opportunity of two points right in front but choose not to take the penalty shot allowing Cessnock to go into half time 8-6.
A blow to Cessnocks chances happened when Joel Edwards did not return after half time having suffered a knee injury but luck was with the Goeys when Willy Poleo went over for his second try of the day.
Joby Patten had an off day with the boot again failing to convert the first three tries, but the scoreboard still read 12-6 Cessnocks way.
Macquarie hit back straight away scoring an opportunist try out wide. The conversion attempt failed. 12-10 Cessnock’s way.
Macquarie were testing Cessnock out wide. A great break by Todd Bates almost paid dividends but it was again the Scorpions who took the chances and within a minute or so where attacking Cessnocks line but the Goeys held them out.
Two or three sets by Macquarie failed thanks to great Goanna work.
Another Cessnock raid failed at the last moment with bad ball control, then it was Macquarie’s turn to do the yards.
Cessnock again hit back where it hurts with Chris Pyne scoring, again out wide leaving newly promoted kicker Claude Gordon with a very difficult conversion attempt which was successful. 18-10.
Cessnock started to stick it to the Scorpions who could not answer, it was shaping up to be the Goannas half.
It was Cessnocks Joby Patten who added a try to his resume, right under the sticks
converting his own try.
24-10 and looking good. Next it was Trent Walker adding his second try for the day, and with Joby Patten converting the score read Cessnock 30 Macquarie 10,
with a little under 8 minutes on the clock.
A mix up by Macquarie saw Trent Walker add another try, his third for the day, and with Patten adding the extras it was now 36-10.
A dominant display by the Goannas, which would have pleased their fans who travelled down to Lyall Peacock to see the game.
A late try to Macquarie on the bell allowed them to notch up 10 points in the second half to Cessnocks 28.
The final score Cessnock Goannas 36 Macquarie 16.
Players Player: Mark White Coach’s award: Joby Patten & Trent Walker

Goals: Claude Gordon (1) Joby Patten (3)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 22 – Macquarie - 38
The reserve grade team had the job ahead of them when they took on Macquarie who had not lost a game since this year.
The late withdrawal of Cale McKenzie meant that Jack Fitzgibbon, Jacob Carey and Jake Law after playing in the nineteens, were elevated to the bench.
The Scorpions were first to score just five minutes into the game, but it was at the end of some very special Cessnock work that Daniel Murray went over, converting his own try.
Lots of hands were involved in a great team effort try. Cessnocks attitude and effort was to be rewarded with another try, this time to Fabian Dunstan.
With Cessnock attacking Macquarie’s line an intercept by the Scorpions winger resulted in a try near the posts.
A very unlucky break for the Goannas, with more bad luck coming when a loose ball behind Macquarie’s line could not be forced by the two Goannas nearby.
The half time score was Macquarie 22 Cessnock 10.
Following the break Chris Riley hit the line at speed and with strength and with Murrays conversion the Goeys score moved up to 16.
Cessnocks inability to keep ball control was taking its toll, especially when near the line.
With fifteen minutes left on the clock Macquarie had extended its lead to 32 over Cessnock 16.
Cessnocks cause was not helped with two players serving time in the sin bin at the one time late in the second half.
A consolation try to Goanna Chris Riley, his second for the day, took Cessnocks score to 22.
The final score was Macquarie 38 Cessnock 22
Players Player: Adam Tearle Coaches Award: Jacob McKendry
Tries: Daniel Murray; Fabian Dunstan; Chris Riley (2)
Goals: Daniel Murray (3)
Under 19's
Cessnock 12 – Macquarie - 46
The nineteens were determined to continue with their recent improvement in form when they took on Macquarie however, on the field the improvement was not there.
Macquarie scored its first try with only 2 minutes on the clock. A long day was ahead of Brad Hafey’s charges.
With the score at 16 nil and two minutes till half time Cessnocks Nathan Aitchison barged his way over for Cessnocks first points of the day.
Jake Chambers converted. 16-6 in favour of Macquarie at half time. Did this mean a late revival by the Goannas.
The Goeys started the second half as they had finished the first but the damage appeared to have been done.
Cessnock did not give up and following some good forward work Jacob Carey scored Cessnocks second try. Chambers converted.
26-12. With a Cessnock player earning a ten minute spell in the bin the Scorpions added four late tries.
The final score had Macquarie Scorpions 46 beating Cessnock 12.
Players Player: Jacob Johnston Coaches Award: Christian Pynsent
Tries: Nathan Aitchison; Jacob Carey

First Grade
Cessnock 20 – Maitland - 12
Cessnock used its get out of jail card last Friday night in a game of football where the Goannas played for only 30 minutes - the first 50 minutes were best forgotten but the last 30 minutes were worth the admission price.
The anticipated arrival of Country full back Dean Amos was greeted warmly by the local Goanna football fans when the locals took on the undefeated Maitland Pickers in round 3 of the Tooheys Cup.
The Goannas were determined to wipe the memory of last weeks game from the screen whilst the Pickers were aiming on keeping their winning formula in tact.
Maitland took to the field with the newspapers saying former Goanna Vern Mason and Blake Burke would not be playing.
The team sheets proved different with both taking the field. One of Maitland's draft players, Marvan Karawana had duties with the Knights and did not play.
Cessnock were at full strength with Dean Amos taking over the custodian position and youngster Beau Ryan shifted to the centres.
Amos had trained with his new team on just one occasion prior to the game but still managed to put in a very creditable performance.
It looked like ball control may be a problem for the Goannas early in the first half. Maitland had the run of the game and then it happened - Maitland's Luke Gibson posted first points for the day.
The conversion attempt failed. Maitland were at this stage all over the Goannas who seemed to have reverted to last weeks game plan. Cessnock dropped the ball, and dropped the ball.
It was Maitland's half and with a penalty goal just before half time they had a 6 nil lead.
First grade coach Todd Edwards would have been a very disappointed coach when the half time siren went off.
It looked like ball control would again be a problem for Cessnock in the second half. Goeys fans were asking what happened to the team who beat West two weeks ago? Maitland were again all over the Goannas.
At last after 50 minutes of football Cessnocks Chris Pyne scored in the corner with Joby Patten's conversion attempt hitting the post. Maitland 6 Cessnock 4.
Cessnock started to play football and with two points on offer, from a penalty in front, chose to run the ball ending up with Willy Poleo getting the four points. Patten converted. For the first time in the game Cessnock were in the led.
The Goannas now started to gain confidence and to hang onto the ball resulting in Cessnocks Beau Ryan showing some great pace outrunning the opposition to score his second try for the year.
Cessnock had started to show the same form as they did against Wests. Alan Lantry added a further try when he followed a barging Sione Finefeuiaki run. Joby converted. 20-6.
With only 30 seconds on the clock Maitland scored wide out, and even though the touch judge said otherwise, the points were awarded.. The final score Cessnock 20 Maitland 12.
Players player went jointly to Brendan Hlad and Sione Finefuiaki. Todd Edwards coaches award went to number 4 Trent Walker.
Tries: Chris Pyne; Willy Poleo; Beau Ryan; Alan Lantry.
Goals: Joby Patten (2 from 4)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 8 – Maitland - 12
With both reserve grade teams yet to win a match the Goannas were determined to show coach Craig Thomas they had it in them to take the points.
The Pickers were first to score early in the half. Mid way through the half an altercation between Maitland and Cessnock resulted in little else than a breather for the players. Maitland added another try right on half time to take the score to 10 nil.
Cessnocks newly formed cheer squad performed during the break and made a very attractive guard of honor for the players returning to the field..
Cessnock put their first points on the board when Heath Tsakissiris went in wide out but the conversion attempt went astray. 10-6 Maitland's way. Maitland added a further 2 points from a penalty right in front of the uprights.
Jarryd Murray joined in the action adding four points for Cessnock but left his cousin Daniel Murray with a difficult wide out conversion attempt which failed. 12-8 Maitland's way.
The game finished with two tries apiece however Maitland converted one and landed a penalty goal to make the difference.
Players player went to Jackson Roe with Craig Thomas Coaches award to Jack Burke
Tries: Heath Tsakissiris; Jarryd Murray
Under 19's
Cessnock 6 – Maitland - 8
The nineteen's were determined to put on a better display than last Sunday if for no other reason than self pride.
The team who took to the field included three from the seventeen's due to lack of numbers . It took 22 minutes before the first points were scored - by Maitland.
The half time score had Maitland in front 4 nil. Soon after half time the Goannas hit the front courtesy of a Jacob McKendry try wide out and converted by Jake Chambers.
The Goeys had turned around their performance. Maitland however, were not to be outdone with the final score Maitland 8 Cessnock 6.
Players player Jacob McKendry with Brad Hafey coaches award to Christian Pynsent.
Tries: Jacob McKendry
Goals: Jake Chambers

Cessnock 10 – Central Charlestown - 26
The newly created St Johns Oval was the venue for last Sundays clash between the Goannas and the highly fancied Central Charlestown.
Both teams were coming off wins last weekend and both were keen to take the points on offer and the chance to hold the Gordon Caddis Shield for the next twelve months.
The game was an early wake up call for the Goannas if they wish to win this years premiership when Central delivered a 26-10 whitewash of the Goannas.
Centrals new grounds look wonderful and provides a great venue for playing football.
The grandstand is however, small and well away from the canteen and change rooms which is possibly the only criticism which can be mentioned. The stand is also very susceptible to rain.
Cessnock took to the field as per program with Claude Gordon getting his first run for Cessnock this year.
Cessnock did not seem determined in attack and as the game unfolded it showed on the scoreboard.
A high shot on Joel Edwards resulted in a penalty but little else and then a spilt ball behind the Cessnock line resulted in the Butcher Boys getting first points.
Football fans seemed all to agree that the Goannas had a shocker.
Perhaps the build up and effort taken into the Wests game last week was left back at Cessnock Sports Ground because it was not evident at St Johns Oval.
Sione Finefeuiaki had a disagreement with a Central player and was given ten in the bin and to Central another try was scored. It was now 12 nil in favour of Central.
Another try to Central and the Goeys were gone for all money. Cessnocks control of the ball, even if it was wet, was not up to standard. Cessnock were lucky when Central again scored only to be called back.
At half time the score favored Central 16 to nil. Cessnock were lucky it was only that score.
The second half started with the heavens opening and Cessnock on the attack. Chris Pyne was unlucky in putting his foot out just before putting the ball down.
Cessnock kept trying and were rewarded when Trent Walker went over to open Cessnocks account after 50 minutes of football. Central returned to their attacking best and put it all over the Goeys due in part to better control of the ball.
With less than ten minutes to go agro started to creep into the game but it was the hard working Alan Lantry who scored allowing Joby Patten an easy conversion.
Score Central 26 Cessnock 10. Willy Poleo was pushed into touch but resisted the temptation to retaliate.
To Cessnocks credit they did not give up trying and hopefully will put this experience, bad as it was, in the past.
Tries: Trent Walker; Alan Lantry
Goal: Joby Patten (1 from 2)
First grade players player went to Beau Ryan who also won the coaches award.
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 10 – Central Charlestown - 34
At least the rain stayed away for the reserve grade game but not Central who breached Cessnocks line with just 13 minutes on the clock.
Cessnocks captain David Lantry left the field and not long after the Goannas hit their straps resulting in a try to Eli McALister - the Goeys when they did have the ball looked sharp but their defense was also a credit to them.
The half time score was Central 12 Cessnock 4.
The wind was behind Cessnock in the second half but it was Central who had the ball and
who put on the first points of the half, and the second points.
Adam Tearle tried to get the Goeys going forward and succeeded in grabbing a try however not to long after a bad backline mistake by the Cessnock team resulted in a run away try to the Central outfit.
Central looked a lot sharper in the later stages of the game and ran in three tries in the last 10 minutes.
In a beaten side forwards Colby Schrader, Adam Tearle, Josh Papworth and Jack Burke all stood out.
Tries: Eli McALister; Adam Tearle
Goals: Daniel Murray
Under 19's
Cessnock 0 – Central Charlestown - 88
The game for the Goannas was lost when the referee blew time on, and provided a complete turn around from last weeks gutsy effort by the boys.
A 38- nil half time scoreline in favour of Central said it all- and what it did not say coach Brad Hafey did say at half time.
The Central team were to big and to fast the Goannas who went into the game with several of their players missing.
In the second half Cessnock could only field eleven players due to several of the named players not turning up for the game, not helped by injury. The issue of selected players not turning up to games will need to be addressed by the club in the near future.

Thursday 9th April 2009
First Grade
Cessnock 20 – Wests - 10
The first competition game of football for the 2009 season took place at Cessnock Sports Ground last Thursday evening when the Goannas took on last years premiers Western Suburbs in front of a large local crowd.
A 20-10 win to the locals went some way to wipe out the memories of last years grand final, but there is still a lot of games to go before we take out the premiership for 2009.
Included in the crowd were former Goanna captain and now Newcastle selector Adrian McNab along with former Goanna half Jack Battye, Knights Junior Sau and Cooper Vuna also attended with Steve Simpson phoning Cessnock Coach Todd Edwards wishing the Goeys all the best.
A minutes silence was observed in memory of Frank "Bumper" Lewis; Aileen Scott and Graham Robertson before kick off.
New Goanna recruit Beau Ryan put Cessnocks first points for the night when the clock had been running only five minutes.
A four point lead to the home side. Poleo's first run brought the crowd to its feet but little else.
Willy's Tongan mate Sione Finefeuiaki did what big blokes do and went through the Wests players to ad Cessnocks second try which was converted to take the score to 10 nil.
Half way through the half Wests started their attacking raids and looked to have Cessnocks measure.
Willy Poleo seemed to be a target of Wests rough tactics but seemed unfazed.
A 40-20 to Wests again had the Rosellas on the attack and with 12 minutes to half time Cessnocks line was crossed out wide. 10-6 Cessnocks way.
Cessnock seemed to be running hot and cold with one attacking raid stopped when the ball was spilt just meters from the try line. Wests took advantage and Cessnocks mistake.
The referee did not help Cessnocks cause and was told so by the local crowd. Wests looked like going in but were called back due to a foot in touch.
The half time score read Cessnock 10 Wests 6.
As solid grind was the order of the day for the first 10 minutes of the second half, along with some doubtful referring decisions.
Some great Goanna work saw Chris Pyne go in wide out,
Patten added the extras. 16-6.
A Joby Patten penalty goal had Cessnock 18-6 in front but Wests hit back not long after .18-10.
The game again became a solid no nonsense affair with big hit ups the order of the day.
A penalty two minutes from full time saw Joby Patten ad the final nail to Wests coffin and a final score Cessnock 20 Wests 10.
The Goannas needed a solid hit out as this was only the second time they had played together against any opposition. They will benefit from the outing.
The players player in first grade was awarded to number 9 Chris Adams although it could have gone to any of the seventeen players who turned out.
Sione Finefeuiaki was awarded the coaches award.
Bring on high fliers Central next Sunday at the newly renovated St Johns Oval when the Gordon Caddis Shield will be played for.
Tries: Beau Ryan; Sione Finefeuiaki; Chris Pyne
Goals: Joby Patten (2)
Penalty Goal: Joby Patten (2)
Reserve Grade
Cessnock 16 – Wests - 22
Reserve Grade started the game without Claude Gordon who was ruled out late in the afternoon due to a clearance problem with his former club however this should be corrected this week.
Cessnocks Chris Riley opened Cessnocks account shortly after the kick off and it thrilled the local crowd but as with the under 19s Wests hit back almost immediately.
Playing only their second game of the year Cessnock looked good in attack but could not put points on against an opposition who eventually had a 12-4 half time advantage.
Cessnock opened the second half with Adam Tearle putting on four points alongside the posts.
The score was now 12-10 in favour of Wests and it looked like game on. Josh Papworth burrowed in and Cessnock hit the front for the second time in the game.
Cessnock looked the better side although Wests can never be taken for granted.
Colby Schrader was having a great game and taking the ball forward with style and toughness.
Chris Riley was another to stand out in a team which should be there when it counts around September.
A penalty to Wests right in front of the posts resulted in a try to Wests and the score to 16 all and six minutes on the clock.
With three minutes left Wests attempted a field goal, luckily for
Cessnock it was unsuccessful, but Wests were not to be denied and went in with one minute left on the clock.
Final score had Wests 22 Cessnock 16.
The reserve grade players award went to Colby Schrader who had a blinder.
Fabian Dunstan in the number one jumper collected the coaches award.
Tries: Chris Riley; Adam Tearle; Josh Papworth
Goals: Daniel Murray (2)
Under 19's
Cessnock 18 – Wests - 38
Against the run of play Cessnocks Tom Higgins went in first but a quick reply by the talented Rosella outfit had the score locked at 6 all with 13 minutes to half time.
Cessnock were not to be denied another smart try, laced with a lot of luck to Eli Deloraine and with four minutes left until half time Cessnock were in front again 12-6.
Cessnocks line was crossed with three seconds left till the break which leveled the score at 12 all.
The second half was Wests half but a gallant Goanna team will be their when it comes to season end.
A great start to the season for the Goannas and something coach Brad Hafey can build upon.
The players player went to Jacob Carey who also picked up the coaches award.
Tries: Tom Higgins; Eli Deloraine; Jack Fitzgibbon
Goals: Jake Chambers (3)

Sunday 31st August 2008 - Final
First Grade
Cessnock 10 – Wests - 12
GRANDFINAL
In front of a huge crowd of Cessnock Supporters, the Goeys played Wests in the NRL Grand Final on Sunday.
After a disappointing loss against Wests a fortnight earlier the boys were determined to turn that around.
Wests took the first points in the match in an early try. And appeared to gain momentum early.
Cessnock however knew they could not let Wests get too far in front and soon enough Joby Patten scored near the posts.
The game was locked at 6-6 right up until half time, and it was obvious this game was anyones.
For the last 20 minutes of the first half and most of the second, Cessnock were indeed the better side.
With great ball control and awesome defense, the Goeys remained calm and scored with a try to Chris Pyne.
This saw the Goeys take the lead for the first time in the match 10-6.
Shaun Skuthorpe followed with another try, yet this was disallowed.
In a match that had definately turned Cessnocks way, it was just a matter of not letting Wests in.
But Wests being the team they are never gave up and managed to score just minutes before the final siren.
It was a fantastic match for the fans and both teams played their best.
Special mention to Adam Tearle and Adrian McNab who had a huge game and were among Cessnock's best.
Congratulations to Dan Quinn (Captain/Coach for Wests) and the Wests side.
The boys played a great game, and have every reason to feel proud of their efforts, for both the Grandfinal and the whole 2008 season.
